My husband and I watched the Netflix documentary American Symphony a few weeks ago. The documentary is about Jon Batiste and his wife, Suleika Jaouad. Jon Batiste was the bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert from 2015-2022. Here is the trailer:
And, then we listened to Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast episode with Jon Batiste (episode release date: December 4, 2023).
Do yourself a favor: Watch the documentary, and then listen to the podcast episode. They are both phenomenal. The podcast episode is able to go into more detail and dig even deeper, but it makes more sense after watching the documentary.
My husband and I are obviously not in the same exact situation as Jon Batiste and Suleika Jaouad, but we could certainly relate to parts of what they are going through as a couple. The health challenges we face are not the same challenges that they face. And, despite being able to sing off-key while completing jigsaw puzzles at the kitchen table, there is an extremely large gap between our musical abilities and Jon Batiste’s musical abilities. So, there are some definite differences, but you get the point.
The documentary and podcast episode were both great reminders of why it is important to share the messy middle of our lives: We help others feel less alone. And, as I have been saying from the beginning of this blog, being authentic myself encourages others to be more authentic. It creates a ripple effect, and I am choosing to continue to be part of the ripple.
Brutal. Chronic health challenges.
Beautiful. Love. Authenticity. Being part of the ripple.
Just another day of . . . This Brutiful Life: The Brutal & Beautiful Moments of My Life.
