The last week has shown me that I needed to do some resting and recovering. My nervous system was showing signs of dysregulation, so I knew that I needed to focus on regulating it as much as possible. For the last 2 days, I have been very intentionally slowing down and doing the little things to help myself rest, recover, and regulate. These are the tools I have used in the last 2 days:
- went on my usual walks and completed walking meditations (for lack of a more accurate word)
- napped
- started listening to a new podcast
- verbally stated gratitude reminders
- cried
- felt the sunshine on my face
- sat on the screened-in deck at my parents’ house
- hugged my husband
- listened to my recorded mantras in my own voice
- visited the graves of my maternal grandparents
- had a video call with my paternal grandmother
- been extra kind and loving to myself
- watched funny TV shows
- participated in our therapy session
- spent time alone (absolutely vital for an introvert, even when we miss connecting with others)
- donated to assist teachers with back to school supplies for their classrooms (gave to others)
- applied targeted acupressure points
- utilized a specific back massage technique down the spine
- saved quotes and reminders for my future self
- completed deep breathing exercises
Healing is, at various times, messy, slow, fast, linear, and non-linear. All of the items listed above have helped me these last 2 days for sure. I am definitely not an expert at life and/or regulating the nervous system, but maybe this list will give you some ideas if you are also needing to rest, recover, and regulate.
Brutal. Needing to rest, recover, and regulate.
Beautiful. Being able to rest, recover, and regulate.
